Unit 5 was about managing the classroom. We learned the best ways to use eye contact, students´ names, gestures, and voice. We also reviewed different ways to set up the classroom, advantages and disadvantages of different student groupings, writing on the board, giving instructions, establishing rapport, maintaining discipline, giving individual attention and both Teacher Talk Time and Student Talk Time. What most stood out to me in this lesson was how to decrease Teacher Talk Time (by giving simple instructions, for example) and focusing on having as much Student Talk Time as possible. Of course, there are situations where Teacher Talk Time is important, but the goal is to have students talk in English as much as possible.
