Super useful and timely lesson. First of all can we reflect on the savagery “ These are five cons to certain groupings I need to consider/have consider: noisiness, revert to native language, take a long time, some students may dominate the group while others don’t speak). Some solutions I’ve already implemented are junkan start, clear instructions, waiting to give papers before i finish instructing, and using a timer to keep the groups on track. I believe it’s necessary to have to walk around and monitor students all the time, but some of my assistants walk around constantly. This chapter said constant monitoring “can be tiring and make the students feel dominated.” I’m glad to have some support in my belief. Going forward I will keep track of how much walking around and monitoring I do, why I do it, and what are the outcomes/goals so I can better assess the necessity of monitoring. Other things I should consider going forward is how I explain GOALS at the beginning of class, how I transition between activities (I need to be more smooth) and how to write on the board while also not slowing down time (i usually have pre written, or have the assistant teach write on board, or I write on the board while they do a different activity). Two other things I want to consider are considering new ways of checking if students understand what was being asked and practice waiting till I have everyone’s attention before talking.
