I agree that teaching pronunciation is extremely important and must be a part of an English language learning plan. I also depend on hard cover dictionaries and on-line dictionaries to assist in this effort. I love that students can click on words and hear the pronunciation over and over again (as much as they need) via Dr. Dictionary, etc. Pronunciation definitely confuses non-native English speakers. I use an excerpt from the I Love Lucy show to show students in a humorous way how Ricky Ricardo struggles with the words cough, bough, through, enough, rough, etc. The excerpt also has Ricky calling the English language "crazy"- students love this because they feel the same way and it validates the difficulty for them. I appreciate that the this unit reviews intonation, phonetics and articulation. Articulation is very difficult to convey and I will use the tips in this unit going forward. It has been a long time since I have taken a linguistics course, and this is a perfect refresher.
