Unit 3: Theories, methods and Techniques analyses the main methodologies that have been utilized to teach language. Each has their strengths and weaknesses but the ESA method tries to use the best points of the previous methods to maximize student learning.
Broken down into 3 stages: Engage, Study and Activate this theory ensures that students are given the opportunities to become engaged in the language, learn the correct use of the new language information then use the new skill in a natural way. Many examples are given of techniques to elicit response from students.For example, playing games, such as alphabet relay in the Engage phase, will allow students to adjust to thinking and speaking in English before taking in new information.
The unit also outlines the techniques for giving and receiving feedback to promote self-improvement.
