Understanding the dynamics involved with receptive learning abilities is crucial to providing elements of traction in learning the language for the student. In this case, it is ultimately important and both reading and listening exercises are adequately balanced -- with each respective exercise complementing and correlating with the other. The first receptive ability, listening, is the first and most natural way in which a language is appropriated. After all, all of us organically learned our first language by first hearing it spoken (more or less being immersed in it). The classroom of course cannot recreate that original environment of learning, but must provide a healthy counter balance of listening/immersion exercises along with reading. Nonetheless, secondary language learning most always takes place within a literate context and thereby, can help expedite language appropriation through reading exercises in a pace that is far quicker than mere 'organic' language learning such as that process which takes place for all of us when learning our native language.
