This lesson concentrated on how to properly teach pronunciation and phonology. I found unit 13 to be the most challenging lesson so far. At first I was confused when I read that pronunciation is the most neglected aspect of English language teaching and that people studying English find pronunciation to be the hardest skill to master. After digging deep into this chapter and studying how to teach phonetics and pronunciation, I completely understand why students find intonation, stress, sound joining and articulation difficult and also why it is difficult for teachers to teach it. Everything in this chapter was new information to me, so I can truly say I learned a lot. Since I am a native English speaker, I don't focus on which words I stress when I'm speaking or how I use different intonation patterns depending on if I'm asking a question or making a statement. I do think that pronunciation and phonology is very important to teach in the classroom but I will have to memorize these rules and pay closer attention to how I talk. I found the section on stress to be interesting because the same sentence was used six times to show that the meaning of the sentence can change depending on which word you choose to stress. I have never studied phonetics before so this was my first time learning about the phonemic alphabet and I think this will be very useful in the future. I loved the "Hints on Pronunciation for Foreigners" reading! I think that would be so much fun to use in the classroom and teach students about phonetics. I'm also glad I learned about the places of articulation. These rules will help me to improve students pronunciation skills. Lastly, it was fun but challenging to translate the phonetic script into normal script. It was like looking at a foreign language but it was exciting to be able to sound everything out and understand the text. I think studying phonetics can really help improve pronunciation and be very beneficial to students.
