What I learned about teaching conditionals and reported speech Teaching ideas for the conditionals: 1. Split sentences – This is an activity where the condition and the consequence of conditional sentences have been split, and students have to match the condition with the correct consequence. • If you exercise you get steam. • If you boil water you’ll be healthier. 2. Complete the conditional - Students are given half a conditional and have to complete the sentences with their own ideas. • If I had a time machine, _______ • __________, I would be very happy. 3. Chain conditionals – This is where students take turns to continue a conditional sentence. • If it rains tomorrow, I will stay at home. • If I stay at home, I will clean my room. • If I clean my room, I will be happy. 4. Other interesting ideas to teach the conditionals include: What a question! Nuclear bunker role-play and ‘what would happen if …?’ Teaching ideas for reported speech 5. Intermediaries – Students get into groups of three. Student A says a sentence to Student B, which is then reported to Student C. To make things interesting, students can do a role play where the husband (Student A) and wife (Student C) have stopped speaking to each other and will only communicate through a third party (Student B). 6. Reporting verbs – This is an activity where students make a list of verbs that may replace the ‘reporting’ verb ‘say’. Each group/pair is then given a set of sentences in the direct speech where they have to use the correct verb for each sentence in the reported speech. 7. Media interviews – Students can devise their own media interview where they are required to use reported speech.
