In this unit, I studied the many different parts of speech the english language is comprised of. For example, nouns, adjectives and verbs. When it comes to nouns, I was aware that a noun represents a person, place or thing, however, I was unaware that there were both countable and uncountable nouns. As a native speaker I have never really payed attention to the parts of speech I use everyday. Having native instinct is a huge benefit, however, while trying to help friends, who are international students, I realized I was unable explain my own language the way I would like to. In middle school I learned the basics of grammar just enough for composing an essay. I am now able to recognize grammatical structures such as gerunds which I knew how to to use the part of speech, however, I never knew the name. This unit has definitely been a great benefit to me.
