Introducing a new language is always a challenge when done wrong students can develop reservations towards the specific issue and may not use it as often as they would otherwise. For my lessons are functions and vocabulary more important than grammar because my students are mainly business people who need to communicate effectively and become fluent as fast as possible. Occasional grammar mistakes not impeding understanding are acceptable. Therefore I do agree with the tree metaphor in theory however sometimes the trunk can be rather short and thin may even be more bush-like yet with plenty of branches and lots of leaves.
