Conditional statements contain an “if” clause and the main clause. The “if” clause is the condition where as the main clause is the result of that condition or action. There are 5 conditional sentences.
The zero conditional is used for actions and situations that are irrefutable. “When you sneeze, your heart stops briefly.”
1st conditionals are used to state a real situation in the future if the present condition is met. “If I read the book, I will understand.”
2nd conditionals are unreal situations that are not true now, and probably never will be. “If I had played the slot machines while in Vegas, I would have become wealthy beyond my wildest dreams.”
3rd conditionals refer to a hypothetical past action that never took place, therefore the result is impossible. “If I had chosen those 6 numbers in the lottery that day, I would have been living in a mansion on the beach somewhere.”
Reported speech is reporting a past conversation as if it happened back at that time. Converting the tenses is required when using reported speech.
