This unit gives me knowledge of how to be flexible in my role to create a friendly, relaxed atmosphere in the class, yet still be able to maintain discipline. This detailed "How to" lesson covers various aspects of the teacher's behavior and actions in the class, including some seemingly simple and basic matters such as making eye contact, voice volume, board writing, when to stand and when to sit, or using students' names. I am very impressed with all the details of the unit. I have realized that to play the role of a good organizer/manager, I need to be observant and sensitive to consider the students' situation and ability, as well as their feelings, in order to make suitable groupings and seating arrangements for the class. Because I teach voluntarily to a class of students with different ages and English levels, some of my students are slower than the others. Therefore, they can hardly contribute, but I don't want them to be excluded from the class activities and remain silent as an empty shell forever. This matter has troubled me for a while. It is nice to know that I can encourage their confidence by asking simple questions to which they are able to give correct answers. Regarding how to give instructions effectively, teachers might likely think that giving out handouts while giving instructions will save time. However, this makes no point when the students' attention to the teacher's words is distracted, which brings a high risk that, after all, they don't clearly understand the instructions given. Also, it is true that the question "Do you understand?" doesn't work to check students' understanding of the instructions. Nearly all of my students have always said "Yes" to respond to this question, but the fact was that they didn't understand as they should have. Asking students to explain back is surely a more effective way to check. Both building rapport with the students and maintaining discipline in the class are important, to ensure a comfortable, motivating and focused environment for all the students in the class. These require the teacher to always act with hearty care to the students while keeping composure at the same time. Classroom Management is a practical unit, and I am eager to practice this skill with my students.
