Lesson 7 focused on how to teach new vocabulary, new grammar structures and language functions. I learned that there are four things that students need to do with new language: be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it's constructed and be able to practice and produce it. I also learned what students need to know about vocabulary, grammar and language functions such as the meaning, usage, forms, and how the words interact with other words. I found the written and spoken forms in the grammar section to be the most interesting because written and spoken English can be very different. English speakers tend to combine words together when they're speaking for example saying "I'm gonna" instead of " I'm going to." After reading this chapter, I feel like I have a better understanding of which activities are best to use in the engage, study and activate stages. This lesson also provided an example of a straight arrow vocabulary lesson, a patchwork grammar lesson and a boomerang language function lesson. These lesson plan examples are extremely helpful and will be very useful to me when I create my own lesson plans.
