Using appropriate course materials is essential to student understanding of the subject matter taught in the class. The right course materials can make learning a topic very easy or impossible if the best material isn't used. Course books are good for tried and tested material that is great for beginners and introducing a new topic but isn't always as up to date or useful for getting students engaged in the learning. Making your own authentic materials allows you to better tailor the lesson plan in a contemporary and focused manner than a course book usually can. The issue with authentic materials is that it relies more on the students understanding what the material is trying to convey, which is not as reliable as using a tried and tested book. If both techniques are used in conjunction with one and other, the students can get a good overview of a subject before delving into a more relevant and interesting topic that can really drive the point home.
