The basics of English grammar are built around the subject-verb relationship in a sentence, or concepts relate directly to the subject or verb. In some cases, like with gerunds, a verb can act as a noun when it is the subject, direct object, or object of a preposition in a sentence. Parts of speech like conjunctions, comparative adjectives, superlative adjectives, and prepositions relate directly to nouns in the sentence which can be the subject or an object in the sentence. Conjunctions, specifically, join words or whole parts of a sentence, not necessarily just nouns.
Nouns can play many roles in a sentence, including being something physical or theoretical; a pronoun can have two forms, personal and possessive; and a proper noun names a specific thing, place, or person. Indefinite articles, "an" and "a", are used to refer to a general one out of a group. "The", the definite article, refers to a more specific one out of a group. Verbs take many forms depending on their use in a sentence they can be used in the infinitive, past simple, past participle, and present participle; all of which describe the action or state of being with a specific meaning according to the time they occur. For example to say "my toy boat sank" carries a meaning that the toy boat sank recently. Whereas in the sentence "my toy boat had sunk" implies that it either was already submerged, possibly for a long time. A verb can be transitive, meaning it will be followed by a direct object, or intransitive, meaning it will not be followed by a direct object, but will still make sense. Depending on the context some verbs can be either transitive or intransitive, while some verbs fit into one category or the other.
