In this unit, I learned the different theories, method, and techniques of teaching. There is no correct method to use, as it depends on the teacher's personality, the students' needs, and the cultures of the students. Students need as much exposure to the language as possible. The teacher needs to provide the correct amount of input and not speak the entire time and students should be encouraged to discover the language for themselves. An effective method that combines all of those factors is the Engage, Study, Activate or 'ESA' method. The course is based on this methodology and submitted materials must follow it this method. Elicitation allows for student discovery and is one of the most important features of an EFL lesson. Elicitation gets the students to speak more, while the teacher observes and has less "teacher telling." Some examples, are real objects, flashcards, drawings, lists, etc. The "Engagement" part of the lesson will get the students motivated and involved with the lesson. This will increase participation and make the lesson more fun for the students. In the "Study" part of a lesson, the students will focus on constructing the language. Worksheets are given to review the material and answers are discussed in the classroom. Lastly, in the "activate" stage, the students will used the language freely. Activities include role-plays, story writing, etc There are different ESA lessons which provides for greater flexibility. Each lesson must have all three elements but do not have to be in same order. However, they must start with Engage and end with Activate. The purpose of giving feedback is to provide self encouragement and improvement. Always look at the positive points when correcting a student. Some examples are posting good work around the classroom, using it as a model to grade papers, or an informal "good job." When correcting a student, it is important to know when to correct them and how to correct them. The study phase would be a good time when students are learning new concepts and not in the engage or activate stage when communication is encourages. As a teacher, it is important to keep the students engaged at all times to keep them focused. I believe more communication amongst the students provides for better retention of the material that is discussed in the class. If the teacher is the only one doing the talking, the students can lose interest.
