Unit 10 gave opportunity to watch two lessons on video, and then the tasks compared the two videos and the effectiveness of each video.
The first video gave an example of a teacher with a bad attitude, one who was impatient with the students and not willing to make the effort to elicit the correct answers from them. He didn't take the time to explain what he was requesting the students do, either in study activities or in the activate activity.
In the second video, the teacher was able to engage and connect with the students. He was mindful of their level of understanding of both the language being learned and how to participate in the various class activities. He acknowledged wrong answers but in a way that didn't make the students feel badly and also elicited right answers. He was able to be flexible with how the students answered the questions.
I felt this unit underscored the need for planning ahead and giving effort to learn ways to connect with the students in ways that they can feel safe and comfortable to learn the language being taught. I found watching how the teacher in the second video interacted with the students and elicited answers from them to be very helpful.
