In the lesson 'teaching special groups', I learned how to teach specifically for various groups or individuals. In teaching beginners, it is important to differentiate beginner categories like absolute beginner, false beginner, adult beginner, young beginners, and beginners who don't know the alphabet. In teaching beginners, you should pay extra attention to your students needs, be as visual as possible, control your language, use pair work and group work, ask lots of questions, assign homework and ensure that you have realistic aims. Problems that beginner teachers often run into is how to help weaker students, trying to go too quickly and helping develop listening skills. In motivating beginner students, do not over correct, do not rely on the book too much, create an encouraging and positive atmosphere and ensure to treat students as individuals. In teaching individual students, advantages can include having highly motivated students, developing close relationships, tailoring lessons to specific needs. But disadvantages can include a loss of classroom dynamics and difficulties in doing some activities that require more people. In teaching individual lessons, using activities from course books, addressing specific needs and maximizing student's interests and experiences can be effective ways to teach them. Activities like short stories, articles from newspapers, horoscopes, quizzes, pronunciation activities, and incorporating audio-visual activities can be effective. In teaching children, it is really important to use patient repetition, positive encouragement and frequent praise to help develop students' confidence. With children, it is important to frequently change activities as their attention spans are often short. In teaching children, it's important to always use English, to speak slowly and directly, acting out meaning, getting children to draw and color, play simple games and give out rewards and encouragement to students. In enforcing class discipline, it is important to take into account that students may be having problems at home, or have behavioral issues like attention seeking, peer pressure, boredom. It is important for teachers to stay consistent in teaching and ensure that lessons are always lively and varied. When teaching children, it is important not to raise your voice, choose favorites, threaten them or be inconsistent. In teaching business english, it is important to take into account the specific needs of students and that they may often be tired because of working full-time jobs on top of taking classes. It is important to first assess the level of the students and then conduct a "needs analysis" which can be a questionnaire to get an idea of the specific content for the course. Teaching multi-lingual classes can have the advantage of forcing students to use English as their only common language. In mono-lingual classes, you should try to get them to avoid using their mother-tongue through moving around the classroom and paying attention to all students, making the work task-oriented, keeping speaking activities short until their fluency improves and starting open pair work.
