1. With a global interest in learning English, it is likely that teachers will be required to teach English to students of various groups (e.g. adult students, beginners, individual students, children, students with a specific English focus – Business English, etc.) It is therefore crucial that teachers are knowledgeable about teaching English to these groups. 2. ‘Beginner’ students may fall into two or more of the following categories: a) The absolute beginner – these are students who cannot speak, read, write or understand English at all. b) The false beginner – these are students who have previously studied or been exposed to English but have not retained the target language. c) The adult beginner – these are students (adults) who have decided to learn English and therefore are motivated and eager to study English. d) The young beginner – these are students who did not choose to study English; and are most likely to be students who go to schools where they are required to take English as a subject. e) The beginner without Roman alphabet – these are students who need to develop their basic literacy skills such as reading and writing. 3. Tips for teaching beginners To name a few, teachers should a) be aware of students’ needs, b) have clear and realistic goals for the students, c) be visual – i.e. use gestures, objects and pictures to express meaning, d) give clear and simple instructions, and e) adjust lessons according to the needs of the students. 4. Tips for teaching individual students Teachers should a) use activities from course books, b) complete a needs analysis form, c) identify students’ language needs, and d) base topics of lessons on the students’ interests and experience.
