I do not think that the importance of that first day in class can be stressed enough. Having a plan for how one will establish rapport, learn the goals of the students, and establish comfort and acceptance in the classroom is incredibly important and will define the rest of the time spent in that class. This unit made me realize that I need to sit down and write out how I plan to achieve all of this in those first few days of my class, which is beginning mid-September. The practical activities in this unit also presented me with some wonderful opportunities to make this process enjoyable, and I hope to utilize some of these in my future classroom. The various potential difficulties discussed in this chapter, such as large classes and varying levels within classes, also made me aware of the fact that I need to be prepared to engage all students constantly even in situations where there is great diversity within the classroom. With the ideas from the text paired with my own education and experience, I hope to tackle these difficulties in a way that provides a rich and meaningful English education for every student in my class.
