The two productive skills are writing and speaking and they are both equally important in communication. There are two types of activities when teaching productive skills: accuracy activities which are normally part of the study phase and concentrate on producing correct language, and fluency-focused which is normally part of the activity phase and is more concerned with creativity and the “flow” of words. Speaking activities in the classroom may be controlled, guided or creative. Some students may not want to speak in class due to nerves, conscientiousness, intimidation, fear of making a mistake or cultural reasons. It is important that the teacher is encouraging and plans for changing up dynamics with pair work or group work.
