The pronunciation in the most neglected aspect in English teaching and good teacher will pay attention on this part of teaching equally as on the other parts. The meaning of some words depends on how we say that words or what someone wants to say in specific situation. Teacher should practice pronunciation with students through dialogue exercises. Phonology is the study of how sounds are organized and used in natural languages. There are three areas for better understanding phonology: stress, rhythm and intonation. Intonation is variation in volume and carries the message in a sentence (express emotions or feelings, questioning, agreeing, disagreeing, confirming, etc.). I learned that intonation in a statements and agreements has the rise/fall intonation. We also use the same rise/fall intonation when we finish what we want to say. Fall/rise intonation indicates surprise, disagreement and when speaker wants the person to whom he’s speaking to confirm or respond. Flat intonation indicates that speaker doesn’t have much to say or doesn’t want to communicate. I learned also that teachers should use different techniques on students in teaching intonation. Next area for better understanding phonology is stress. Stress is a “strong” part of the sentence, and there are different ways of interpreting sentence depends of the stress word. One word has only one stress and we can only stress syllables. Teachers can also use different techniques for indicating and teaching stress. I learned that linked speech is the way how the native speakers speak (there is a different how it is written and how it sounds). Students also can learn how to pronounce words using dictionary. After traditional spelling, there are symbols of the international phonemic alphabet. Also, teachers can use different techniques for the pronunciation of individual sounds and each teacher has to decide when to teach pronunciation.
