The first and second video are night and day! In the first video, the teacher immediately walks in, takes a few moments to look over the lesson plan that he's supposed to be teaching right then, which was off putting. He clearly had not taken the time before to prep and look over and it felt mildly disrespectful to the students. When the students were confused and silent because they did not understand what he was asking for, he kept repeating "necessary" as if the more times he said it then it would magically make them understand what he wanted. He also jumped right into teaching and it felt hurried and as if he's trying to tick the boxes versus genuinely making sure everyone understands and is apart of the lesson. When the teacher said the word and then had the class as a whole repeat it, he's not able to hear if students are saying it incorrectly. One positive teaching style he incorporated was he used pictures (e.g. no left turn arrow) to help elicit words and convey his lesson. I liked that the second video, the teacher introduces himself and asks for everyones names thus creating a personal connection. On day 2 (assuming this is day 1 since he introduced himself), he could start class by asking "Hi ______, what did you do last night?". He could ask "how are you ________ (insert name)?" but that only elicits "I'm good" versus the first question that will make the student use more English. The second video the teacher seemed more personable and interested in engaging all the students so they can effectively learn. The activity at the end where the students asked questions to each other and the teacher and then they responded with "yes, I do/ no, I can't" created talk time between the students where they could practice their English without judgement. This type of an activity is perfect for shy students that may not want to participate in front of the whole class and feel more comfortable speaking in front of one or two people.
