This was an interesting unit covering the four basic skills used in any language - the two 'Receptive' skills of reading and listening and the two 'Productive' skills of speaking and writing. The video lesson was very useful and the speaking skills lesson provided a lot of very useful information. The Accuracy vs Fluency section taught us that the Study phase of an ESA lesson focused more on Accuracy as we were teaching target language while the Activate phase focused more on Fluency as it was important to get the students speaking in a realistic way. We covered three basic types of Speaking Activities - Controlled, Guided and Creative and we were shown a useful straight-arrow ESA lesson plan. The two receptive skills of reading and listening were covered in the video and in the unit notes. We were taught some of the specialist skills that readers and listeners use - Detailed, Scanning, Skimming, Prediction and Deduction. In the Patchwork ESA Sample Lesson the Engage 1 phase had a timed skimming/scanning task and during the Engage 2 phase the students had to do some detailed reading. The section on how to avoid potential problems with listening and reading was useful with some good advice about only pre-teaching the words that are essential to understanding as the skill of learning to understand texts without knowing every word is an important one.
