This unit focuses on two out of four basic skills needed in languages, referred to as receptive skills. These are reading and listening. It informs that we read and listen for two main reasons: for entertainment and/or for a purpose. Both reading and listening use our senses and our brain functions to understand languages and we can do this effectively by learning some key skills such as predictive skills, reading/listening for detailed information, scanning, skimming and deducting information and meaning from texts or words. I also learned that pre-teaching problematic vocabulary at the beginning of the Study Phase and using non-authentic and authentic texts when appropriate can assist in common problems experienced when teaching and learning new language. Creating and maintaining interest and using a variety of topics are also key factors to consider when teaching a language and trying to make it easier for students to receive information.
