This unit compares two different attitudes towards teaching, demonstrating the proper way and the wrong way to motivate students to fully participate in the classroom. In the first video, Simon says hello and then jumps right into the study phase. His attempt at explaining the goals of the lesson is unclear and confusing. The students are unsure what he is talking about. The instructor often seems impatient and frustraded. He sometimes talks too fast and doesn't connect with the students. As a result, they are confused and nervous.
In the second class, Simon introduces himself and asks the students to tell him their names. His positive and friendly attitude helps to break the ice and causes the students to relax and concentrate. This provides a great learning environment to master the knowledge and skills that are being taught. The teacher uses effective elicitation techniques that increase the students talk time. For all the reasons mentioned and more, the second class was superior in every way to the first one.
