It's great to learn more about typical ESA lessons and provided in the unit are some great examples/ ideas on the teaching of vocabulary, grammatical structures and language functions.
The section on teaching vocabulary tells us that students can usually understand many words but lack the knowledge about how to use them. As teachers we need to ensure that when teaching new vocabulary the students understand what it means, how and when to use it, where it belongs grammatically and how it interacts with or affects other words. Equally important is teaching the correct spelling of the vocabulary and the correct pronunciation.
When teaching the different types of language functions, for example: inviting, refusing, agreeing, suggesting etc. it is important to choose the appropriate kind of language - does it need to be formal, informal, technical.....?
The teaching of language functions highlights the need for activation of language and this type of lesson is most effective with either the boomerang or patchwork ESA structures.
