eliciting allows the teachers to ask thought provoking questions allowing the students to speak while reducing teacher talk time. Asking a question like "how was your weekend" will elicit "good" from a student whereas if you ask "what did you do this weekend" then they will answer "I studied and played basketball" encouraging them to speak and listing out activities. ESA is a brilliant structural form that allows the class period to have variety and movement. During the initial engage stage, the main point is to get the students minds thinking in English with no pressure or anxiety about corrections. After the words and sentences flow easier then the "study" section comes into play if it is a "straight arrow" lesson. The teacher tries to elicit as much information as possible and then presents the topic that they are trying to teach that day. Activate allows the students to use the newly acquired information in the form of games, story writing, role play, etc. There are three different styles of organizing engage, study and activate and it's best to switch up the patterns to provide engaging and interesting classes every day. An important part of the lesson plan is feedback and generally positive feedback is best. Encouragement will push the kids to keep trying their best and using positive words creates a safe learning space. If a mistake (slip of tongue that they then self correct or correct after prompting) is made, gentle encouragement from the other students or teacher as a last resort can help them learn. It's imperative not to correct every single mistake because then the child will be apprehensive about speaking. The best time to correct students is during the study phase when the teacher is teaching the applicable lesson.
