This unit taught me the basics of teaching the two productive skills, writing and speaking. I learned the differences that I must pay attention to when trying to teach accuracy versus fluency. The unit also gave me good examples of various speaking activities that would be good for teaching accuracy or fluency. I think it was important that the unit highlighted reasons as to why students might not be motivated to practice speaking, and that that is something I should keep in mind when planning a lesson in order to do things such as incorporating group or pair work, choosing topics interesting to the students, or incorporating more guided practice to make the students feel more comfortable and prepared. The unit also laid out the aspects of writing that may be problematic for students learning English (e.g. handwriting, spelling, punctuation). Lastly, I learned about incorporating games into the classroom and came up with my own ideas for games to use drawing upon games I played as a child.
