I have taught informally for a few years, and this is the first time that I am officially learning about teaching. During these years, I had never deeply reflected about the definitions and roles of both teachers and students, how each are viewed and what characteristics are common in good learners and in good teachers. I was surprised to see the vast range of teachers' roles, from assessor to participant to resource and beyond, and this quantity reflects the fluidity and capacity of teachers. I believe that the best teachers, on top of having interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity, are aware of these different roles and interchange effectively between them to keep learners motivated and working towards achieving their goals.
Another interesting point was the framework for the language level of a beginner, elementary, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced learner. I was aware of the Common European Framework before, but outside this framework I had always found conflicting definitions among learners and teachers. I look forward to learning in more detail about level assessment and becoming more familiar with the groundwork of definitions contained in this unit to improve the quality of my teaching.
