This was quite a content-heavy unit that included information a crash course on phonology, with information about intonation, stress, and phonemes of the English language. Intonation refers to how sentences rise and fall to indicate whether someone is making a statement, requesting a response, or uninterested to begin with. Stress, on the other hand, refers to how individual syllables are emphasized in each individual word, and how these may change when words are put together in a sentence. Finally, phonemes of the English language were introduced with reference to how these phonemes are articulated, not just in the shape of one's mouth and the placement of one's tongue but from which organ the sound is being produced (if and when they are used), and how air is used accordingly.
I have always found pronunciation to be one of the hardest aspects of the English language to teach, because each different language has different ways of articulating sound and consequently each learner's ears is accustomed to a native set of phonemes, which often makes it hard for learners to reproduce English phonemes, let alone be able to distinguish them to begin with. Nevertheless, this methodical approach has given me some confidence in teaching English phonemes to new learners, and has given me tools to dissect other native languages to help me in correcting learners' possible speaking habits.
