As a teacher, it is important both to monitor the students as well as oneself. To the students, the teacher is essentially a gateway to the language/learning material. Therefore, it is important for the teacher to both set a good example as a model but also to give the information and knowledge that the students need and in a manner that makes learning and remembering easier. However, it is also important to give the students room to grow and to discover the interest in learning a new subject themselves. Hence, leaving a certain amount of room for the students to research, learn, and ask questions. At the same time, it is important to be accessible to the students when they need help or to step in and give a gentle nudge in a certain direction (facilitation). Most importantly, this relationship should be comfortable for both the teacher and the students. Both the teacher and the students should feel comfortable giving and receiving criticism and asking questions without feelings of being attacked or disrespected. As a teacher, therefore, it is important to sense the role to be played at each time whether to guide the students, to facilitate learning, or to participate as a member. In this way, it should help draw out the quality of good students such as motivation, willingness to ask questions, accept errors, and willingness to learn the course material. This is important in interacting with both young learners and adult learners. With young learners, it is especially important to draw out the motivation to learn. Since young learners are generally less rigid in the learning experience, therefore it is easier to for them to accept new ways of learning. For adult learners, it may be more reasonable to act as a facilitator or a participant as it may be more comfortable for the adults to ask questions as a peer than as a teacher. All this considered, it should also be taken into consideration to give reasonable course material in terms of language level. Giving beginner level students advanced level homework is as pointless as giving advanced level students beginner level work. They will not learn anything from it as the former can't understand it and the latter has already mastered it.
