Evaluations are great ways to monitor the student's learning progress as well as helping to plan future course focuses. Evaluations can take the forms of tutorials, student evaluations, and tests. Tutorials are basically a review practice to see how much material is remembered and used at a certain time period. Student evaluations require the students to tell and explain how much they learned, what needs clarification, etc. Tests, the most common way of evaluation take many forms. Generally, at the beginning of or before a course, a diagnostic test or placement test may be given. The placement test allows the teachers to know the language level of the student and the diagnostic test allows the teacher to know what the student already knows and what they don't. This allows for better class planning so that things such as teaching intermediates beginner course material or vice versa doesn't occur. Progress tests generally take place multiple times through the course to monitor student progress and see how well they absorbed the material or to go back on any that seems problematic. Practice tests are helpful to practice for external tests which are used more as an entrance exam rather than a progress report (a lot more at stake). External tests generally place the students in level within an English-speaking community rather than an English-learner community. External tests come in many forms, some geared for studying in an English-speaking country, others for Business or just general life skills.
