Each type of learner requires different styles of teaching from the teacher. Not all classrooms are uniform in level, age, number, experience, or even native culture. In general, with all the groups, it is important to maintaining the interest and the motivation of the students as well as giving clear and concise instruction while directing the conversations as much as possible in English. It is also always better to overprepare rather than underprepared as the extra material can always be covered the next class. With beginners, it is important to maintain student confidence as it directly impacts motivation. It is better to have the lesson done mostly visual or with things that can be seen/heard/experienced, etc. Homeworks are also helpful for more practice, but it is important to keep in mind other coursework as well. With children, it is very important to keep the children's attention by keeping the classroom fun (although this is also important for others) as well as avoiding the native language completely as they will be conditioned to just wait until the teacher speaks in the native tongue. With individual students, it is necessary to start with an initial assessment to determine the focus as well as interest. It is better to do one-on-one activities such as conversation role-play or guided conversation rather than group activities as there aren't enough people. For ESP, it is very important to do a needs analysis to plan for future lessons. There may be needs for individual work or some specific areas as each can have a different career need. It is also important to keep in mind that the students work outside of class and therefore may need very flexible lesson plans (e.g. less material, or pushing the lesson in favor of conversation class).
