Unit seven covered how to introduce language through the ESA method. The three topics covered were grammar, new vocabulary, and functions. For each topic, there was a section on techniques and an example of an ESA lesson. In the engage, study and activate section, there were examples of activities that a teacher can utilize to present and how students can practice the structure. In the grammar section, the reader is informed of what the students will need to know. For example, the meaning, the patterns, spoken and written forms, and the use. An example of a patchwork lesson was given for reference. In the “teaching vocabulary” section, the reader is given a criterion on how to select vocabulary. Some examples are: appropriate for the student, frequency and coverage, and teachability. Also, the reader is given information on what students need to know about the vocabulary words. Lastly, language functions were covered. Language functions include areas such as suggesting, refusing and inviting. In language function lessons, activation is important, to effectively teach this, a boomerang and patchwork lesson are used. When learning functions, a student should be taught appropriacy, and the kind of language used such as formal and informal. In unit seven, I learned how to create a patchwork, straight arrow and boomerang lesson depending on the grammar, vocabulary or function. Also, which method is the best when giving a lesson on one of the three. Lastly, I learned how to select vocabulary and what students need to know about the vocabulary.
