The past tense is very similar to the present tense in its grammatical construction. There are four categories of past tenses: past simple, past continuous, past perfect, past perfect continuous. The past simple tense is used for actions taken place at a definite time in the past. Regular verbs can be conjugated by adding -ed or -d to the end. There are some irregular ones which require a different spelling of the words. These have to be memorized. The past continuous is used for actions taken place in the past but without a definitive time, continuous, or interrupted. These can be conjugated by adding the proper form of "was/were" before the base verb+ing. The past perfect tense is used for a completed action before another past action/event. This can be conjugated with the proper form of the auxiliary verb "had" before the past participle of the main verb. Last is the past perfect continuous. This is generally used for an ongoing action which began before a past event/action. This is conjugated by adding both the proper forms of "had" and "been" in order before the main verb+ing. The past tense is easier to understand after acquiring a basic understanding of the present tenses.
