Unit 11 teaches about two receptive skills – listening and reading, which are equally important and should be equally applied with other two skills – speaking and writing. The Unit notes that listening and reading are always used with two particular reasons: for some purpose and for entertainment. However, mostly we mix these two motives and use skills of listening and reading for two reasons at a time. There is a number of ways we listen and read the information, like predicting, skimming, scanning, understanding in details and deducing the meaning from the context. The Unit provides some teaching techniques to prevent listening and reading problems, such as pre-teaching vocabulary, choosing texts carefully, choosing topics, creating interest between students to the topic, if necessary, and providing some comprehension tasks.
