The biggest things I took from this unit are the importance of having an easy going positive attitude, of starting simple when explaining things, and of the importance of eliciting as much as possible from the students. Right from the beginning, the first lesson was awful. There was no engage activity, and the teacher talked far too much. He came in and jumped right into complicated material that the students clearly didn't understand. He even made a difficult situation worse by then telling the students over and over that they were wrong and not even attempting to clarify the problems. You can see that the students become defeated very quickly. From the second you walk in the door, you as a teacher have an effect on the students. Positivity goes a long way. In the second lesson, he talked far less by having the students introduce themselves. Then in the first engage phase, they still did most of the talking. All of his efforts seemed to be aimed at getting the students to speak as much as possible. You can clearly see that his positive attitude made the classroom much more enjoyable and opened the door for the students to participate and learn.
