Unit thirteen covered pronunciation and phonology, dealing with the areas of intonation, articulation, stress, and the international phonetic alphabet. Intonation is the variation in volume and pitch of a sentence, it is important in confirming, agreeing and disagreeing, and questioning. It is also used in the expression of emotions and feelings. The first pattern of intonation is the rise/fall pattern. It is used for greetings, questions, instructions, and statements. The second pattern covered is the fall/rise pattern. It indicates that the speaker wants a response from the person he or she is speaking to. Lastly, there is the flat intonation, it indicates that the speaker does not have much to say. The second area covered was stress, stress is concerned with individual words rather than the whole sentence. There are many ways of interpreting a sentence depending on the stressed word. The last area covered was the phonetic alphabet. The International Phonemic Alphabet was created to help people accurately pronounce words. To pronounce a word correctly, the person must find the symbol that produces each individual sound of a word and then put them together to form the phonetic spelling. For each area in the unit, there was a section on teaching techniques to help teach stress, intonation, and the pronunciation of individual sounds. In unit thirteen I learned about a different method of teaching pronunciation that did not utilize the International Phonemic Alphabet. By having a different perspective, I have a better understanding of pronunciation and phonology. Lastly, I learned more about the place and manner of articulation. Which I can use to describe the location of the sound being produced.
