There are both advantages and disadvantages to coursebooks. Although coursebooks are organized and tried, it is too generalized and rigid for the need for a flexible class. However, they are a good supplement material as they can provide extra practice, give some ideas for the general flow, and allow the students to see the general progress of the course. In any case, it is best to not be overly reliant on it as it is probably not going to cater to every need of the lessons. Other than textbooks, teachers can create material or bring in materials. Authentic materials are generally better geared towards the intermediate or advanced students as they understand more of the structures and vocabulary. This will allow them to build confidence in facing similar real-life encounters as well as offer a wide range of interesting topics beyond what the teacher can provide. Unauthentic material is better suited for beginners as it allows the teacher to gear a specific topic or aim. Other than these, teachers can also provide games and worksheets and activities to make the course engaging and motivating all while utilizing the learned material or learning new material. With language learning, it is important to 'use' the language rather than just reading through a textbook. Hence, activities are a very important part of the EFL classes.
