Modal auxiliary verbs are added before the main verb to place emphasis or description to the verb. Often such expressions carry information such as requests, obligations, the degree of certainty, etc. It is one of the few ways that the English language expresses formality. Passive voice places emphasis away from the action doer of the main verb, which in active voice is usually the subject. It often places emphasis on the receiver of the verb. It can be used for when the performer is unknown, is of no importance, or is left out. Relative clauses can be separated into two categories, defining and non-defining. Defining relative clauses use personal pronouns to defines the doer of the verb by acting as the subject of the sentence and is essential to the meaning of the sentence. Non-defining relative clause simply adds detail without contributing any essential meaning to the sentence. Lastly, phrasal verbs are action words, acting as one meaning, formed by two or more words. The intransitive phrasal verbs cannot be followed by a direct object. The transitive separable phrasal verbs make sentence only when placed next to each other in the sentence whereas the transitive inseparable often are interjected by the direct object to make any meaningful sense.
