Unit fourteen covered books and materials used for lessons. Course books consist of the following material: students’ book, teachers’ book, workbooks, videos, and other printed material. Course books have both advantages and disadvantages. Some of the advantages: it offers ideas for inexperienced teachers, provides a balance, it is less time consuming, provides security for both the teacher and the student, and it can be graded to the level of the students. Some of the disadvantages: using it can be a compromise, it does not always fit the student's needs, it can dictate a lesson and the books can be outdated. A teacher can choose to omit certain parts of a lesson, use the supplemental material, replace unsuitable material or adapt the material to their own style. There are a few factors that need to be considered: price, topic, availability, design, the balance of skills, the methodology and the material included. The second resource a teacher can use in a lesson is the material. Course materials are divided into two groups: authentic material and created material. Authentic material consist of newspapers, magazines, songs and other material native speakers would hear or read. It is not geared towards students learning the English language and is, therefore, is not tailored to the student’s English level. The created material, on the other hand, is created by the teacher to enhance or replace the course book. Some created materials are crossword puzzles, role-play, and flashcards. By analyzing unit fourteen I have learned that it is important to create a balance of authentic and created material. Students will benefit by having both integrated into a lesson in a controlled manner and a more flexible and up to date manner. I have also learned of the factors that need to be taken into consideration when one is able to choose the course book.
