Unit 18 is a review of the uses/functions of modals when constructing more meaningful sentences. Modals, when clearly explained to learners, add more texture and context to speech. Unit 18 also reminds teachers of the appropriate use of the active and the passive voice of a sentence. An active sentence is no different from a passive sentence, except for their emphasis within the sentence – with an active sentence the doer of the action as its subject while the receiver of the action is the subject in a passive sentence. The unit also highlighted the difference between a defining and a non-defining relative clause. Finally, Unit 18 also discussed phrasal verbs and reminded that “teachers should keep track [of these] verbs that have been taught and try to use them naturally during uncontrolled practice/conversation.”
