I have learned about the roles of effective teachers and learners.
Teachers have a variety of roles to play. A teacher should be prepared to facilitate and monitor the students and actively engage, tutor, prompt and participate. Which role I need to play will depend on the proficiency level of the class, their motivation for being there, their age or their cultural background. Being a good teacher is largely about understanding my learners.
Learners will come in a variety of forms and I must be cognizant of the makeup of my class. But despite this, good learners will have common characteristics. They should be willing to listen and ask questions. Meanwhile, they should experiment and be prepared to get it wrong. But when they do, they should accept feedback and try again!
In sum, I have a deeper appreciation for the nuances of teaching an eclectic group of students. I must be aware of this and tailor my role, language and classroom activities accordingly.
