Unit twenty covers issues that a teacher may encounter. When teaching the first lesson, experienced teachers use activities rather than utilize the course book. By doing this the teacher establishes rapport with the students and between students. It also helps the teacher gauge the English level of each student. Some of the activities a teacher can utilize are surveys and questionnaires. Instead of the lesson starting right away, warmers are used to motivate students and make them use English. Hangman, Pictionary, and memory games are a few examples of warmers. One big issue teachers face is the varying levels of English within a group. One way to combat this issue is by using different materials for the stronger student and the weaker students. The teacher may also choose to do nothing or pair stronger students with the weaker ones. Using the native language is another issue a teacher may encounter. To encourage the use of English, teachers should make sure the activities are at an appropriate level and make sure explanations are clear. A teacher can also elicit English by only responding in English, reminding and encouraging students to use English where appropriate. Having large classes can present a few issues as well, to counter issues that may arise a teacher can use several techniques. A teacher can use worksheets, pair or group work and use choral repetition. Some students may be reluctant to participate or talk in class due to culture or confidence issues. A teacher can use pair work, role-play, and controlled practice to encourage students to speak and participate in class. These are some of the issues a teacher could encounter and a few solutions to troubleshoot. I have learned about common problems a teacher could face and how to use different techniques to fix the issue. I have learned about different ideas when dealing with reluctant students that I had not been familiar with before. I have also learned that the first lesson does not need to follow the coursebook but instead, a teacher can use activities to establish rapport, find about the students and find out the language level of each student.
