The unit teaches the two receptive skills: reading and listening. It also covers the skills needed for comprehension. Instruction is given to the teacher as to why the choice of topic(s) is so important to captivate students' interest. A comparison of authentic (e.g. a newspaper article) and non-authentic (e.g. an English lesson for 1st-graders) texts or dialogue is given and discussion on where each is appropriate, as well as how to use them to bolster students' confidence.
