A brief overview of the content of Unit 1: The qualities that a good teacher should have. In a word, a good teacher cares much about the learning of students so that to improve his teaching. The roles that a teacher plays in class: Manager / Controller, Organizer, Assessor, Prompter, Participant, Tutor, Resource or Facilitator, Model and Observer / Monitor. The qualities that a good learner should have and a teacher should always encourage and foster these attributes. The major differences between adult learners and young learners in different learning-related aspects. The levels of language abilities and their characteristics. The motivations of learning English. What I feel about what I learned from the content: First, I think it's really challenging to balance the roles that a teacher should play in class, because it depends on the activities that are adopted and what the students need in their level. As teachers, we concern about the effectiveness of our teaching, so we desire to fulfill our roles well in class. However, it will take a lot of time to know our students and to figure out which role to play will be more suitable in accordance with their ability. Secondly, knowing what makes a good learner allows me to affirm certain kinds of behavior of students in class. Sometimes I feel annoyed when the flow of teaching is interrupted. Now I realize that I should be very careful not to discourage students when they are getting excited asking questions. Thirdly, the major differences between adult learners and young learners are very useful reference for adopting teaching methods. After studying these differences, I tried to reflect on my early learning-experiencing period as a teenager and compared it to now as an adult. I understand more about the different expectations of these two kinds of learner, which leads me to think about how I can meet these expectations. Lastly, by understanding the motivations of learning a language, I can quickly locate the situations that my students will use the language. Through which, I will be able to offer more authentic scenes for them to practice using the language.
