Unit 13 discussed course books and lesson materials. In particular it explained that within an ESL lesson you have two types of materials: Authentic and Created. Authentic materials relates to anything that a native speaker of the language would hear or read on a daily basis such as newspapers, books, movies, menus, songs, poems, brochures and much more. Created material refers to lesson materials that were designed by the teacher like crosswords, word searches, gap fill activities, role play cards, flashcards, picture stories and more. This unit also discussed how course books have their advantages and disadvantages and explained what the best use of a course book is and how to analyze whether or not a course book is relevant for your class.
