In this ‘troubleshooting’ unit several common classroom problems are reviewed. Specifically: first class lessons; varying levels if the entrance testing is not robust; a reluctant and potentially obstructive student; use of native language; problems with listening exercises; using effective ‘warm ups’ to get help the students shift into gear; over-crowded/large classes can be unavoidable on occasion. With most of these issues, the skilled teacher will show control, be organised, be creative with activities, materials, use workarounds but in particular the teachers personality will prove an asset, specifically his/her rapport/capacity to connect with students.
