This unit discussed the importance of creating a lesson plan and the pertinent information that one should include.
Lesson plans are important because they can act as:
• An aid to planning – Writing down what you expect the students to accomplish and how you’re going to achieve that.
• A working document – Something to refer to throughout the lesson and keep you on target.
• A record – Can act as a type of journal to refer back to in time if need be, or for others to use if need be.
Some basic principles of creating an effective lesson plan include:
1. Keeping it simple
2. Don’t script in order to avoid becoming lost if things don’t go according to plan
3. Create a structure and try to maintain it throughout the lesson
4. Write approximate times for each activity
5. Try to ensure activities fit together o ensure a smooth lesson flow
6. Keep the plan flexible and open to adaptation
