This unit discussed the various methods and techniques that have been, and are currently, used in teaching English. Teaching theories have evolved significantly throughout history, and modern teaching methods aim to take the best features of each from the past.
Engage, Study and Activate (ESA) is the methodology to be used for this course, as it is deemed the most effective and most logical of all the methodologies for new teachers to learn and apply. ESA is comprised of the following 3 main components:
1. Engage - Where teachers try to arouse interest and get their students involved.
2. Study - Where actual teaching is performed. Information is conveyed and students are focused on construction of the language.
3. Activate - Where students are using as much of the language as freely as possible.
Many examples of classroom ideas for each stage were provided.
Feedback and correction techniques were also discussed.
